The New York City (NYC) Attorney General’s office on Friday issued a new warning against two pharmacy websites that allegedly sell illegal Viagra to a New York City resident without a prescription.
A second pharmacy, Viva Pharmacy, sold $4,000 worth of the medication last year, while an alternative website, Pharmacy1, had a $10,000 price.
The New York Attorney General’s office said in its news release that a spokesman for Viva Pharmacy declined to answer questions about the site’s legality.
“Viva is not licensed to sell prescription drugs in New York, but we urge anyone who has been prescribed or uses prescription drugs for erectile dysfunction to get their health care provider’s advice before they purchase Viagra. We are very aware that the Viva pharmacy is operating illegally in New York,” the company said in the announcement. “This is a very serious matter and we urge the New York State Attorney General’s office to investigate and institute a legal system that effectively controls the sale of prescription drugs.”
The site was not part of a group called the “Pharmacy For Better Health,” which has been accused of illegally selling prescription drugs to residents in the city.
“Pharmacy1 is the only pharmacy in the city that sells Viagra,” the spokesman said. “We are aware of this and will vigorously defend our client’s right to a fair and impartial therapeutic decision for this issue.”
In recent years, pharmacies have gained notoriety for illegally selling prescription drugs to New York residents.
In 2005, the city’s Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) seized more than $2 million worth of Viagra pills from a pharmacy, according to the city’s website. The drug is not classified as a controlled substance.
The city also seized several prescription-only drugs, including Lipitor and Plavix, and an additional three brand-name drugs, including Zocor, Cialis and Levitra.
